Who We Are

An organisation that works with communities, not for them

Sustainable Development Initiatives (SDI) is committed to improving the lives of vulnerable and marginalised communities across Africa. Working in partnership with local communities, governments, donors and development organisations, we deliver sustainable solutions in education, health, agriculture, climate resilience, women's empowerment and governance.

Over the years we have supported communities to strengthen the systems that carry change forward — long after our teams have moved on.

What Drives Us

Mission, vision and conviction

Our Mission

Advancing education, health and opportunity for marginalised communities through sustainable, community-driven solutions that create lasting impact.

Our Vision

A future where every person has equal access to education, healthcare, economic opportunity and sustainable livelihoods, regardless of where they live.

“Every person deserves a fair share of the world's resources, the right to shape their own life, and an education that is never treated as optional.”

This conviction shapes every programme we design and every partnership we build.

Our Values

The principles behind the work

These values guide how we work, how we make decisions, and how we hold ourselves accountable to the communities we serve.

Integrity

We uphold the highest standards of honesty, transparency and accountability in everything we do.

Equity

We believe every person deserves equal opportunities and access to essential services regardless of their background or circumstances.

Community Ownership

We work alongside communities, ensuring local people lead and sustain the solutions that affect their lives.

Collaboration

We believe lasting impact is achieved by working together with communities, governments, partners and donors.

Innovation

We embrace creative, practical and evidence-based approaches to solving development challenges.

Inclusion

We promote diversity and ensure that women, children, youth and persons with disabilities are meaningfully included in our programmes.

Sustainability

We design long-term solutions that strengthen communities and continue creating impact long after projects are completed.

Excellence

We strive for quality, professionalism and continuous improvement in every programme and partnership.

Our Approach

Sustainable because communities lead it

Four principles guide how every SDI programme is designed, delivered and handed over.

01

Listen & co-design

We start with the community's own priorities, not an outside blueprint.

02

Build local capacity

We strengthen the people, systems and institutions already on the ground.

03

Deliver & measure

We implement together and track real, measurable impact — openly.

04

Hand over ownership

We exit by design, leaving communities in charge of what comes next.
